Today's subwoofers most commonly range in size from 8 to 21 inches, but there are specialty applications where units as large as 60 inches in size and as small as 4" in size are used. The considerations when selecting specialty units are the enclosure, permitted distortion, desired frequency and pressure level of the provided sound. Most commonly used bass subwoofers are 10, 12, 15 and 18 inch units. As an example of the use of small subwoofers, one has only to look at the desktop speakers tied into computers, and on the other end of the spectrum we have the show style units that keep us hopping to the beat.As a result of the nature of the lower frequencies that produce the bass sound, the conversion of electrical energy into sound energy is terribly inefficient and hence the need for higher power output for subwoofers.

 The internal pressures exerted on the enclosures by the operation of subwoofers, require most subwoofer cabinets to be constructed of durable, rigid materials with additional structural bracing added in to assist in the distribution of internal pressures. Materials such as MDF (medium density fiberboard), OSB (oriented strand board), plywood, aluminum and fiberglass are most frequently used.as the cabinet material In most vehicular applications, we use hardwoods due to their durability, adaptability and ease of installation.There are several considerations in the design of woofers, such as frequency response, range of pitch and sound pressure. Frequency response is the range of musical tones or frequencies that a speaker can reproduce. The common use subwoofers that we purchase as either part of a home surround systems or considered an add-on, operate in the range of 20-200 Hz, a Hz or hertz being a unit of frequency measure, much in the same way that a volt or watt is a unit of electrical measure.

Bought this for my 2004 Jeep Rubicon with center console sub woofer, had to cut a few of the plastic ribs to get it to fit deep enough but it was a simple task, took 30-minutes for the modification. Used a pair of diagonal cutters. This speaker sounds 100% better than the factory sub and with the aftermarket head unit it thumps. The TJ amp supplies power to all the speakers so there is a built in crossover to keep the low frequency bass away from the soundbar and front speakers. Great speaker and great price. Could use more power to drive it but for now I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

I gave this speaker high marks, not because it is the best speaker I have ever heard, but because it does exactly what I wanted it to do. I have a 2004 Jeep Wrangler with a console mounted factory sub-woofer. The factory speaker went bad and I started looking for a replacement that did not cost close to $200 like the OEM one is. It is not hard to imagine that you can't get a true sub-woofer sound in a 6 ½ inch package, but what you do get is a faithful reproduction of the factory original, and you get this for around $25.00. This shipped from Parts Express where you also get top notch customer service. The only con and it is not the fault of the speaker but the application is you have to take a Dremel tool to the inside of the housing to get it to fit. This took about 30 minutes.

I have recently started to do my first speaker project and decided to buy this as my sub for my Bose Companion 2 (Left&Right) wired to my Onkyo TX-17 Quartz Synthesized Tuner Amplifier, and if wired and boxed correctly this thing will THUMP. Great sound especially with the added voice coil, i never knew subs could produce treble so well like this, i tested blu-ray movies and games along with some rock n' roll cd's and the sound is thrilling!. GREAT BUY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!:)
